Research
We trace how molecular mechanisms influence neuronal circuit dynamics and behavior throughout life, and turning these discoveries into new strategies for neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions.
We conduct basic neuroscience research under 3 broad topics:
- Wiring the Brain: We investigate the genetic and cellular programs that guide the assembly of neuronal circuits, and examine how disruptions in these processes lead to neurodevelopmental disorders.
- Nervous System in Action & Resilience: Using advanced tools, we study how defined cell types support adaptive sensory and motor behavior, learning, and plasticity.
- Failing & Repairing Nervous Systems: We aim to identify the initiating molecular insults and circuit vulnerabilities that drive major disorders and design interventions to halt or reverse disease progression.
Welcome to the VIB-KU Leuven Center for Neuroscience!
Our scientists investigate every scale – from molecules and cells to systems and behaviour – coming from all around the world to tackle these challenges together. We house several technology hubs, where dedicated teams scout and build the tools needed for every breakthrough. With over a hundred patents, multiple start-ups and a track record of innovation, our work doesn’t just stay in the lab: our researchers help turn new insights into therapies and diagnostics. We offer a unique environment where neuroscientists can grow in their careers, whether they’re starting a PhD, pursuing a postdoc or launching a new lab.
